then through the eighth portal into the second floor bathroom in the winter of 1913. although the bath is in the process of draining its occupant is already dressing in a bedroom above. when empty step into the bath and listen for the striking of the dinner gong in the main hall. at this point the ninth portal will open, taking you to the front door in the late 1960's. ring the door bell. a woman will answer who will believe that you are the new gardener. she will hand you a packet of seeds and a hoe and will direct you to a freshly dug bed, outside the scullery window. go as directed. discard the seeds if you wish but retain the hoe. follow the gravel path past the scullery until you see the shed. using the hoe prise the door open. the tenth portal will open against the back wall within two to three minutes. this will take you to the first floor landing on the morning of easter day 1896. if you care to look up the stairwell you will see yourself on the third floor running for the twenty eighth portal. we will come to that later. take the second door to your left. someone is asleep in the bed here so be as quiet as possible. crawl under the bed. you will have a wait of six and a half minutes before the eleventh portal opens. you will fall (i am afraid this is unavoidable, so brace yourself) in to the fruit cellar in about the mid 1940's. in the centre of the floor is a well, covered with an old barn door. push the door inside and stand at the lip of the well. now listen carefully to the grandfather clock in the hall above. it will strike eleven. on the eight strike you must throw yourself into the well. the twelfth portal will open before you hit the water. this will take you to the drawing room in 1822. there will be a crying man at the window with his back to you. ignore him and proceed to the fireplace. crawl into the hearth and wait for the thirteenth portal. it will open just as the man turns around (for reasons that will become clear, do not let him see your face). this will take you to the kitchen area in 1789. the kitchen, however, has not been built yet. only the foundations to the house are in place. proceed through the building debris to the oak tree that stands in the back garden. if you look up you will see a red glove caught in the upper most branch. climb the tree until you reach it. we have left the glove as a precise indication of where the next portal will open. a crow will caw, then a fallen apple will land in the neighbouring orchard. at this exact point the fourteenth portal will open into |
